В 1999 году на 23-й сессии Комиссии “Кодекс Алиментариус” был учрежден Региональный координационный комитет по Ближнему Востоку, объединивший страны Ближнего Востока (для ФАО) и Восточного Средиземноморья (для ВОЗ). Первое заседание комитета состоялось в Каире (Египет) в 2001 году.
В настоящее время региональный координатор по Ближнему Востоку базируется в Центре обеспечения безопасности и качества пищевых продуктов при Министерстве сельского хозяйства, рыболовства и водных ресурсов в Маскате.
Выступая в роли регионального координатора по Ближнему Востоку и председателя Координационного комитета ФАО/ВОЗ по Ближнему Востоку, Султанат Оман ставит перед собой следующие задачи:
- Активизировать усилия, направленные на содействие эффективному участию стран-членов и всех заинтересованных сторон, включая производителей, потребителей и соответствующие правительственные и неправительственные организации Ближневосточного региона, в работе Кодекса Алиментариус.
- Продолжить наращивать и укреплять национальный потенциал государств-членов и региональных организаций с целью обеспечения возможности эффективного участия в учреждении международных стандартов на пищевые продукты.
- Следить за тем, чтобы при разработке стандартов Кодекса Алиментариус на глобальном уровне учитывались особенности производства и потребления пищевых продуктов в Ближневосточном регионе.
- Способствовать принятию и применению стандартов Кодекса в качестве основы для национальных решений по регулированию пищевых продуктов в государствах-членах региона. Это положительно отразится на здоровье потребителей и облегчит торговлю пищевыми продуктами как на региональном, так и на международном уровне, а также будет способствовать развитию производства продуктов питания в регионе и повышению их конкурентоспособности на региональном и международном рынке.
In commemoration of World Food Safety Day (WFSD), the Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) is participating in the celebration of the second WFSD through a series of events and activities under the theme “Food safety, everyone's business”. Thirty-eight participants from Yemen, Sudan and Egypt are currently meeting in Cairo for a three-day workshop on Codex Alimentarius and its procedures. Organized by the SAFE Codex Initiative with the support of FAO and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), this training is part of the planned activities under the Codex Expert Working Group work plan, aimed at helping countries in the Arabic region define priorities on food safety and Codex.
