Mandato:a) Determinar los problemas y las necesidades de la región en materia de normas alimentarias e inspección de los alimentos;
b) promover en el seno del Comité los contactos necesarios para el mutuo intercambio de información acerca de las iniciativas propuestas en materia de reglamentación y de los problemas derivados del control de los alimentos, y estimular el fortalecimiento de las infraestructuras de control alimentario;
c) recomendar a la Comisión la elaboración de normas de alcance mundial para los productos de interés para la región, incluidos aquellos que a juicio del Comité puedan ser objeto de comercio internacional en el futuro;
d) establecer normas regionales para los productos alimenticios destinados exclusiva o casi exclusivamente al comercio dentro de la región;
e) señalar a la atención de la Comisión cualesquiera aspectos de su labor que revistan particular importancia para la región;
f) fomentar la coordinación de todas las tareas relacionadas con las normas alimentarias regionales emprendidas por organizaciones internacionales, gubernamentales o no gubernamentales, en la región;
g) ejercer una función general de coordinación en la región y cualesquiera otras funciones que le pueda encomendar la Comisión, y
h) promover la aceptación, por los países miembros, de las normas y los límites máximos para residuos que haya establecido el Codex.
