Italy’s Scientific Society for Evidence on Environment, Food and Workplace Safety (UNPISI ATS) is organizing a World Food Safety Day webinar on the subject of “Mushrooms: food safety and supplements”. The event aims to raise awareness about the importance of food safety to everyone.

Edible mushrooms can be a source of carbohydrates, proteins, minerals and vitamins, including calcium, iron, manganese, selenium, B vitamins and folates. And in recent years, research has shown that some fungal species have other beneficial properties: since ancient times the Ganoderma lucidum species has been used in Chinese medicine and is considered a true "elixir of long life ", so much so that it was renamed "The Mushroom of Immortality".

But in Italy many people suffer from food poisoning as a result of picking inedible mushrooms, or from eating mushrooms that have been stored inappropriately. The problem is such that in some areas, including the Regions and Autonomous Provinces of Trento and Bolzano, specialist public mycological control centres, called "mycological inspectorates" have been established.

At the World Food Safety Day event speakers will include Giovanni Rossi, prevention technician and UNPISI ATS President, who will present a paper entitled “Food safety in Italy: public control of fresh epigean mushrooms “. A paper entitled "Mushrooms and the contribution as new food supplements Mg, K, Se, Zn / P in mushrooms (dried)" will then be presented by Salvatore Oppo, President of the Centro Studi per la Flora Mediterranea, Giovanni Rossi, and mycologist Emidio Borghialsofrom theCentro Studi per la Flora Mediterranea.

The UNPISI ATS event is open to its members, and members of the Centro Studi per la Flora Mediterranea.
