The 44th session of the Codex Committee on Methods of Analysis and Sampling (CCMAS) has commenced in a virtual format, with an opening speech from the Codex Alimentarius Commission Chairperson, Allan Azegele, who emphasized the fundamental importance of CCMAS work to Codex texts. “CCMAS is a highly specialized committee and plays a critical role in the Codex system,” he said. “The soundness of food standards depends heavily on the reliability and comparability of analytical methods and the consistency of sampling practices. Our work ensures that food safety and quality standards are not only scientifically robust but also practically applicable across diverse global contexts.”

He outlined the agenda items ahead of delegates this week, including the endorsement of methods of analysis submitted by Codex subsidiary bodies, the review of methods in the Recommended methods of analysis and sampling (CXS 234-1999) – known by its reference number simply as “234”, the fruit juices and the cocoa products and chocolate work packages, as well as methods for precautionary allergen labelling. He also mentioned the ongoing work to finalize the information document to support the implementation of the General guidelines on sampling, which will be a digital document.

“Among others, these deliberations are vital for ensuring clarity, consistency and scientific accuracy in the standards that support international food trade and protect consumer health,” he continued, acknowledging the hard work of “the Codex secretariat the host country Secretariat, our scientific experts, Members and Observer delegations, and the technical experts who advise and support you for contributing to the work of the Committee. Your expertise is what drives our success.”

The virtual sessions will continue for the week 5–9 May, and the report will be adopted 14 May.
