World Food Safety Day / “What makes food safe?” First ever poster competition has launched!

09/05/2025

FAO and WHO have launched the first ever World Food Safety Day poster competition!

Launched on 7 May, the competition invites all students, from those at school to those studying for university degrees, to design a poster answering the question: “What makes food safe?”

The competition acknowledges the key role of education in ensuring that the science of food safety continues to innovate and provide the basis of food safety advice. It also recognizes the enthusiastic engagement of schools and universities in World Food Safety Day to date.

“In the six years since World Food Safety Day was launched, we have seen students organizing campus exhibitions, lectures and symposia on food safety, as well as quizzes and public awareness raising efforts,” said Dr Markus Lipp, Senior Food Safety Officer at FAO, and World Food Safety Day team leader for 2025. “We have also seen numerous school initiatives where young people around the world have learnt about food safety through dance, song, artwork and, increasingly, policy level initiatives. For this, the first World Food Safety Day competition, it is young food safety enthusiasts we would like to hear from.”

The competition is open for one month, and will close on World Food Safety Day itself, 7 June. The winners will be announced on 7 July on the World Food Safety Day website and the @FAOWHOCodex X account.

The posters will be judged by a panel of experts from FAO and WHO and a prize will be awarded to the winning entry from each of the Codex regions: Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, the Near East and North America and the South West Pacific.
