Republic of Korea celebrates Food Safety Day with “Safety, Consideration, Growth and Innovation” as the theme

08/05/2025

To commemorate the 24th Food Safety Day, the Republic of Korea held an official ceremony on 8 May.

Since 2002, the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) has designated 14 May as Food Safety Day each year to promote public understanding, raise awareness, and foster a shared commitment to food safety.

To complement this day, the period 7–21 May has been designated as Food Safety Week, during which a wide range of events and activities are held. From 8 to 9 May, various promotional booths are being showcased at Seoul Plaza, jointly organized by the government and food industry.

At the opening ceremony on 8 May, Sarah Cahill, Secretary of the Codex Alimentarius Commission, delivered her congratulatory message via video. “Despite facing many challenges, Korea has continued to demonstrate unwavering commitment and innovation in the field of food safety, earning recognition as a global leader,” she stated, commending the country’s achievements.

Oh Yu-Kyoung, Minister of the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, also emphasized Korea’s commitment to food safety in her address. “The food safety environment is becoming increasingly complex and dynamic due to challenges such as the climate crisis, emerging technologies, and evolving consumer trends,” she noted. “In response, the Ministry has identified ‘Safety, Consideration, Growth, and Innovation’ as our core values for this year. With public safety as our top priority, we aim to foster the growth of K-Food and build an inclusive and innovative food safety system.”

Reaffirming these values, Minster Oh added, “The Ministry will remain proactive in addressing the ever-changing food landscape, and we will continue working to create a society where everyone can enjoy food with peace of mind—anytime, anywhere—where food safety becomes a part of everyday life.”
