Happy World Food Safety Day!
World Food Safety Day is here! And we’re encouraging everyone this year to promote “Food safety: science in action”.
Hundreds of events have been planned around the world, some of them have announcements posted on the World Food Safety Day website. Since its first celebration in 2019, World Food Safety Day has really taken root – and for that, we must say a big thank you to all those who have recognized that “Food safety is everyone’s business”!
"Food Safety: Science in Action," perfectly captures the work of Codex. Codex standards and related texts, from maximum residue limits for pesticides to hygienic practices and labelling rules, translate scientific evidence into practical tools for applying good food safety practices, whether for governments, food businesses operators, or consumers.
This year’s theme also coincides with the 100th meeting of the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA), at FAO headquarters, an important milestone, and a reminder of the fundamental work FAO does, together with WHO, to provide the scientific advice that underpins robust, internationally agreed guidance on food safety.
This year FAO is also celebrating its 80th anniversary and so this marks an opportunity, too, to celebrate the way in which FAO collaborates with organizations, such as WHO – and many others - and with entities such as the Codex Alimentarius Commission. It is this collaborative work that helps ensure food is safe.
This year, FAO is the lead organizatioon of the World Food Safety Day celebrations and, in a video message, the FAO Director-General, QU Dongyu, underlined the importance of this year's theme, and also highlighted the need to encourage young people to engage in food safety efforts: "We must ensure that everyone, especially the youth, have the tools and skills to think critically and take decisions based on evidence and science," he said.
World Food Safety Day 2025 is about raising awareness that we all need to make sure we use the food safety guidance available to us. We need to make sure the science is put into action.
Join us in the celebrations, it’s not too late to get involved – see below for some useful links.
