World Food Safety Day / Pakistan calls for action
A World Food Safety Day event in Islamabad concluded with a national symposium titled “Science in Action: If it is not safe, it is not food” on 17 June. Organized by IMPACT Research International with regional food authorities, the event gathered policymakers, scientists, diplomats, and development partners to discuss Pakistan’s food safety challenges and promote science-based solutions.
One of the key sessions, focused on investment and policy for a safe food environment, and featured Catherine Bessy, Senior Food Safety Officer at FAO, who highlighted the importance of science-based policies and stronger governance to protect public health and support trade. The panel also addressed the risks posed by Pakistan’s informal food sector—particularly unregulated milk—and called for urgent investments, updated “farm to fork” policies, and capacity-building. The symposium concluded with calls to action for coordinated efforts across sectors to strengthen food safety in line with international standards.
