CCEXEC89 / Executive committee deliberations start ahead of the 48th Commission meeting
The 89th Session of the Codex Executive Committee (CCEXEC) has commenced at FAO headquarters in Rome, ahead of the 48th Session of the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC), which will be held in the week 10–14 November.
The meeting heard opening remarks from FAO Deputy Director-General, Godfrey Magwenzi, who highlighted the celebrations that have recently taken place to mark FAO’s 80th anniversary which included the launch of FAO’s Museum and Network. These milestones, he said, “celebrate not only what we have achieved, but also what we strive to accomplish: ending hunger and ensuring access to safe, nutritious food for all”. He continued: “Codex is central to this mission. It was prominently featured in both the Global Exhibition and the Museum, underscoring its enduring relevance and impact.”
Luz De Regil, Director of WHO’s Nutrition and Food Safety Division, congratulated FAO on the 80th anniversary milestone and took the opportunity to restate WHO’s commitment to Codex. “Together, WHO and FAO are committed to transforming our global food systems to meet the urgent challenges of our time—climate change, emerging food safety issues, antimicrobial resistance, and the adoption of innovative approaches and technologies,” she said. “These challenges demand bold action and deep collaboration. Despite the complex and demanding global landscape, WHO remains steadfast in its support for Codex activities.”
The CCEXEC89 meeting is chaired by CAC Chairperson, Allan Azegele, who outlined the work ahead for this week in his welcome remarks. He noted that in addition to the monitoring framework discussions, there will be a review of the work of four committee meetings, as well as other points of discussion. “Our deliberations are instrumental in safeguarding Codex as a body that remains efficient, science-driven, future-focused, and truly global in its outlook — always guided by its statutory purpose: to protect consumer health and to ensure fair practices in the food trade,” he said.
