Food Tank to host panel discussion on “One Health” for World Food Safety Day

07/06/2021

The food advocacy organization Food Tank will host a panel discussion on World Food Safety Day to discuss "One Health: Food Safety for All". The panel will include key international experts from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO), as well as from academia and the public sector.

Food Tank’s Danielle Nierenberg will host the discussion with Francesco Branca, Director of the Department of Nutrition and Food Safety, WHO, Tom Heilandt, Secretary of the FAO/WHO Codex Alimentarius Commission, Makaiko Khonjefrom the MwAPATA Institute in Lilongwe, Malawi, Professor Alan Reilly, who worked at the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) and Dr Carla L. Schwan, from the Food Safety and Defense Lab, Kansas State University.

Discussion will focus on the One Health approach to food safety, which recognizes the connection between the health of people, animals, plants, and the environment. Animal and plant health are critical to the capacity of agriculture to produce enough food to feed the world. Keeping animals healthy also minimizes the risk of zoonotic pathogens (disease-causing organisms that can be transmitted between animals and humans), antimicrobial resistant organisms and more.

This event will also be made available as part of WHO’s Health Talks, which form part of the Food Systems Summit Dialogues, which are taking place in the run-up to September’s Food Systems Summit.
