The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is launching a new project to facilitate the implementation of Codex Standards on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) to support the containment and reduction of foodborne AMR.

The project will kick off with an inception event on Thursday 17 February 2022 from 14:00-15:00 CET, with a focus on the Latin America region. Food safety and AMR experts from FAO together with representatives from Codex and the Republic of Korea will introduce the background, scope, and expected outcomes of the project.

A new publication bringing together all three Codex texts on AMR, including the new guidelines on monitoring and surveillance of foodborne AMR, will also be presented at the inception event.

AMR, a silent pandemic, threatens the achievement of the sustainable development goals. The Codex guidelines and code of practice will provide countries with a framework to build effective national systems to monitor, minimize and contain the risk of foodborne AMR.

The Republic of Korea is funding the five-year project through FAO to support global, regional and national level efforts to implement the Codex AMR texts.
