World Food Safety Day / Romania University holds poster competition for students

12/06/2025

Romania participated in World Food Safety Day by hosting the 6th edition of the  “Youth and Food Safety - PolySafeFood” Competition. The event was organized by the Faculty of Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology and Environmental Protection at Politehnica University Timisoara, Romania. This event encouraged middle school, high school, and college students to explore five key themes impacting food safety within the food chain, which they then presented as posters along with a video containing the presentation of the poster.

This year, the event unfolded in two stages. The first stage was conducted online and involved a poster contest, where a total of 148 participants from 17 counties submitted their posters and an accompanying video presentation via email, addressing the theme they had chosen. The best projects were selected to participate in the second stage, an in-person event organized on May 30th, dedicated to the selected candidates from each category. This event culminated in a face-to-face and online broadcast awards ceremony where winners were announced, highlighting the importance of food safety and the need for more specialists in this field, as emphasized by faculty representatives. The ceremony was enriched by the presence of esteemed representatives from several notable food companies in Romania. We organized interactive stands featuring food displays and hosted a poster session where students showcased their work.

The event was organized to align with the message "Food safety is everyone's business". The competition aims to cultivate interest in food science, particularly chemistry, enhance critical thinking and creativity, and promote responsible consumer behaviour among participants.

Organizers said: “We are delighted with the enthusiastic participation and the profound impact this event has had in raising awareness about food safety. The event has been actively promoted via social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram, fostering wide-ranging engagement.”
