WHO and FAO have launched an interregional initiative to strengthen food safety systems and enhance countries participation in the Codex Alimentarius Commission across Africa, the Near East and the Eastern Mediterranean Region. The initiative responds to growing challenges to food safety, including complex global supply chains, climate-related impacts, and economic pressures, underscoring the need for robust national food control systems aligned with international standards. 

As part of the initiative, a three-day virtual training held from 19–21 May 2026 brought together over 350 participants to build capacity for effective engagement in Codex work. The training covered Codex structures and processes, the role of science and risk analysis, and approaches to strengthening national Codex coordination mechanisms.

Participants also shared country experiences on developing national positions, generating scientific data and enhancing stakeholder coordination. The initiative further promotes collaboration with regional organizations to support harmonized approaches to food safety. Strengthening participation in Codex contributes to improved consumer protection, more effective food safety systems and better integration into regional and global food trade. Continued collaboration will support countries in addressing emerging food safety challenges while ensuring that international standards reflect regional priorities.
