World Food Safety Day Celebrated in Türkiye

11/06/2025

World Food Safety Day was marked in Türkiye with a high-level event held on 3 June 2025, coordinated by the General Directorate of Food and Control under the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry.

The event, hosted by the Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, İbrahim Yumaklı, brought together a wide range of participants, including representatives from international organizations, public institutions, academia, civil society, and the food industry.

In his opening speech, Minister Yumaklı emphasized the significance of this year’s theme, “Food Safety: Science in Action,” and stated: “Food safety is the assurance of public health, the guarantee of the producer’s labour, and the most vital link in the chain that brings food to our tables. Guided by science and a zero-tolerance approach, we are working with determination to ensure the safety of food from farm to fork. Across all 81 provinces, our inspection teams, supported by strong infrastructure and scientific capacity, are actively conducting controls, monitoring, and analysis. I sincerely thank all our dedicated personnel who contribute tirelessly to this mission.”

The event was further enriched with video messages from Dr. Betül Vazgeçer, Vice-Chairperson of the FAO/WHO Codex Alimentarius Commission, and Barbara Gallani, Head of Communication and Partnerships at the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), both emphasizing the importance of international cooperation in ensuring food safety.

Two thematic panel sessions titled “The Role of Science in Food Safety: From Theory to Practice” and “Information Pollution” provided valuable discussions on emerging risks, scientific solutions, and communication challenges in the field of food safety.

The General Directorate of Food and Control reaffirms its commitment to ensuring that safe food is accessible to everyone, and that food safety remains a shared responsibility for a healthier future.
