World Food Safety Day / Ghana celebrates

Ghana joined the rest of the world to celebrate the World Food Safety Day on the 18 June 2025, with a symposium. The celebration was spearheaded by the National Codex Committee to create awareness on the role science plays in ensuring food safety through standards. The celebration brought together participants from various government institutions, academia, and research institutions, including the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Fisheries Commission, Ghana Standards Authority, Food and Drugs Authority, University of Ghana, Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, and many more.

The symposium highlighted the role of science, research, and innovation in ensuring food safety and provided a platform for dialogue among stakeholders on how to foster collaboration in implementing their mandate to ensure food safety to protect public health and promote sustainable practices.

The highlight of the event included a keynote address on the theme "the role of science in ensuring food safety," which highlighted the need for collaborative research that incorporates the indigenous knowledge.

The event also brought together experts from the University of Ghana, the Science and Technology Policy Research Institute CSIR-STEPRI, Ghana Standards Authority, Food and Drugs Authority, and Consumer Advocacy Centre for a discussion on the opportunities and challenges in research and academia. The dialogue highlighted the importance of applied research in identifying foodborne hazards and developing mitigation strategies as well as challenges faced by academia and research institutions. The dialogue also emphasized the opportunities in collaboration, capacity building, and investment in research in Ghana.
