World Food Safety Day / ACT in the Plurinational State of Bolivia

18/07/2025

In the Plurinational State of Bolivia, the National Service of Agricultural Health and Food Safety, (SENASAG), as the national competent authority for animal and plant health and food safety, has celebrated World Food Safety Day every year since its establishment. The year 2025 was no exception. Producers, food processing companies, and SENASAG professionals coordinated a series of activities to commemorate the Day.

These initiatives aimed to strengthen efforts to ensure that food consumed in the country is safe, to incorporate food safety into the public agenda, and to reduce the global burden of foodborne illnesses.

As part of the activities, FAO, through the Action to support implementation of Codex AMR texts (ACT) project, supported the organization and launch of World Food Safety Day during an event held on 6 June 2025 at the Chamber of Industry and Commerce (CAINCO) in the city of Santa Cruz. The event was attended by 111 participants, including producers and representatives from food processing companies, as well as the representative of the Minister of Rural Development and Lands, the Vice-Minister of Consumer Protection, authorities from the Santa Cruz Departmental Government, the FAO Representative in the Plurinational State of Bolivia, among others.

Representing the Santa Cruz Departmental Government, Dr Erick Euler, in his remarks, highlighted the organization of the event and encouraged continued efforts in food safety.
María Poveda, representing SENASAG, opened the activities by thanking the institutions that make up the National Coordinating Committee for the Containment of Antimicrobial Resistance (CC-RAM), the representatives of food processing companies, and FAO for their ongoing support in organizing this day dedicated to food safety.

Following the launch event, a seminar titled “Food safety: science in action” was held. Two professionals were invited for the occasion: Vesna Boric, laboratory specialist consultant for the ACT project in the country, who presented on “Biological Contamination in the Food Chain”, and Yamil Mattos, Quality Deputy Manager at Frigor S.A.. The seminar was attended by students from the Gabriel René Moreno Autonomous University of Santa Cruz, technical staff from SENASAG, professionals from food analysis laboratories, members of the CC-RAM, and other stakeholders in the sector.

In addition, staff from SENASAG, together with institutions that make up the CC-RAM, three universities offering biochemistry and pharmacy, and nutrition and dietetics programmes, the National Poultry Association as a primary producer, and 36 food processing companies, held a fair showcasing products made with food safety measures. The purpose was to raise awareness among attendees about the importance of food safety. The event took place on 6 June at the premises of the SENASAG Santa Cruz departmental headquarters. Each of the SENASAG departmental headquarters organized fairs where food processing companies showcased their products demonstrating food safety standards, as well as raising awareness and providing information about the importance of food safety.

The ACT project, in coordination with SENASAG within the framework of CC-RAM, supported the provision of materials for outreach activities (banners, banners on poles, and roll-ups) and provided refreshments for attendees at the events organized by SENASAG.
