Samoa holds a week-long celebration of World Food Safety Day

World Food Safety Day (WFSD) activities in Samoa took place from 31 May to 7 June 2022, with the participation of over 1000 people. Activities consisted of interviews with Samoa National Codex Committee members, the screening of the interviews on television and social media, a World Food Safety Day-themed Trivia session on national television, and food-safety booths located next to the Accident Compensation Corporation Building (ACC) in Apia, Samoa.  

Interviews with Tagaloa Eddie Wilson, Managing Director of Wilex, Samoa; Christina Ulberg, ACEO of the Health Protection and Enforcement Division (HPE, MOH),Segialii; Marie Malaki-Fa'aofo, ACEO of the Quarantine Division (MAF), FisoPousui; Fiame Leo, Manager, Technical services at the Scientific Research Organization of Samoa (SROS), Pulotu; Lyndon Chu Ling, CEO of MCIL; and Xiangjun Yao (FAO), a Codex Observer, were broadcast on TV5 Samoa, EFKS TV2, and the MCIL YouTube Channel.  

The Trivia session was carriedlive on the national television station, TV 5 Samoa, on 6 June 2022 during prime time. The questions included 30 food-safety questions, six of which were directly related to Codex Alimentarius. The presenters wore World Food Safety Dayt-shirts and promoted the slogan, “Food safety is everyone’s business.” Winners won World Food Safety Day merchandise and prizes sponsored by local businesses. On 7 June, MAF, MOH, MCIL and FAO co-hosted a gathering that featured booths and started with remarks by the CEO of MCIL. This was followed by the distribution of food-safety pamphlets to members of the public. The representatives asked the audience food-safety-related questions throughout the day, rewarding correct answers with World Food Safety Day t-shirts. The booths also facilitated networking among the Codex members.  

The activities were co-organized by the FAO Sub-regional Office of the Pacific Islands (FAO SAP), Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries (MAF), Ministry of Commerce Industry and Labour (MCIL), and the Ministry of Health (MOH).
