World Food Safety Day / ACT in Nepal

18/07/2025

FAO Nepal supported several activities for World Food Safety Day this year, with contributions and support from the Action to support implementation of Codex AMR texts (ACT) project in Nepal. These activities included college-level awareness events on food safety, nutrition, and antimicrobial resistance (AMR). On 4 June, the College Awareness Programme on Food Safety and Foodborne Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) was organized at Golden Gate International College, Kathmandu, Nepal, where 60–80 students from six colleges within the Kathmandu Valley participated. The event was a collaborative effort between the Department of Food Technology and Quality Control (DFTQC), Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Nepal, Department of Livestock Services (DLS), and the World Food Forum (WFF) Nepal Chapter. The programme aimed to educate college students on the importance of food safety and the growing threat of AMR, which undermines food security, public health, and sustainable agriculture.

The World Food Forum Nepal Chapter facilitated an engaging 30-minute interactive session using the “Ring Minefield” group activity, where students from all colleges participated.

Sports activities were also organized as part of an overall “better health” push on the part of organizers. A cricket match and a friendly badminton match were organized by the Department of Food Technology and Quality Control (DFTQC) featuring a team representing the Nepal Bureau of Standards and Metrology and a youth team, including members of the World Food Forum Nepal Chapter. The cricket match provided an informal yet impactful space where the importance of food safety and joint efforts in agri-food system transformation were subtly but powerfully highlighted. These activities were part of Nepal’s broader national observance of the 17th National Food Safety Day, celebrated under the global theme “Food Safety: Science in Action.”

On 7 June, FAO Nepal, in close collaboration with the WFF Nepal Chapter, DFTQC, the Government of Nepal, key development partners, and representatives from the private sector, came together to celebrate World Food Safety Day under the global theme “Food Safety: Science in Action.” The highlight of the day was a dynamic and well-participated rally organized in the heart of Kathmandu, symbolizing a unified call for stronger food safety practices throughout Nepal. Approximately 500 participants, including youth leaders, government officials, journalists, university students, schoolchildren, private sector representatives, and members of various youth networks and food safety advocacy groups, took part.
