World Food Safety Day / Bangladesh event unveils food safety magazine and calls for collaboration

22/06/2025

The Bangladesh Food Safety Foundation (BFSF) organized a seminar and unveiling of a magazine on 21 June 2025 in Dhaka, Bangladesh with Saidur Rahman, Secretary of the Health Services Division of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare as the Chief Guest. The seminar focused on the “Use of science for better management of food safety: Bangladesh perspective.” Preceding the seminar's presentations, the guests on the dais performed the ceremonial unveiling of 'Nirapod Khadyo Kothon” (Food Safety Talks), the Bangladesh Food Safety Foundation's inaugural magazine issue.

Keynote speaker Dr Monzur Morshed Ahmed, Director of the Bangladesh Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (BCSIR), highlighted that scientifically determined procedures are followed at every step of the food supply chain. He noted the Codex Alimentarius Commission's guidelines, applicable globally, and explained how improperly following good practices and hazard analysis harms human health, discussing the challenges. He stated that while established food industries can produce safe food following the established scientific methods, smaller and cottage-level enterprises cannot. Therefore, he stressed the importance of increasing resources and technology utilization by relevant government and local government institutions to ensure food safety.

Among the panel discussants, Engineer Md Saidul Islam, BSTI, Rebeka Sharmin, Nestlé, Dr Sk. Mahtabuddin, Atomic Energy Regulatory Authority, Agriculturist Dr M. Jaynul Abedin, Professor Dr Md Riazul Islam, Mahbub Kabir, Former Member, Dr Iqbal Rouf Mamun, Dhaka University, Dr Md Shahinur Alam, Department of Livestock, and others presented their respective views on the seminar's topic. They emphasized the importance of awareness among all parties, food safety culture, enhancing the capacity of food control agencies, collaborative work, and providing training.

Zakaria, Chairman, Bangladesh Food Safety Authority, and Md Anowar Faruque, Former Agriculture Secretary, were present as special guests at the seminar. Engineer Mohammad Liaquat Ali, Founder Director General, Bangladesh Accreditation Board, presided over the seminar.

Md Saidur Rahman, Secretary, Health Services Division, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, in his speech as chief guest, highlighted the connection between safe food and nutrition, and between unsafe food and illness, along with the financial burden on families and the country. He opined that achieving the objectives should be the goal through the collective efforts of all organizations.

Finally, the seminar urgently called upon all stakeholders—government, industry, academia, and consumers—to work collaboratively in filling the gaps in scientific practice and implementation across the 'farm-to-table' food chain. It also called for the mandatory implementation of robust infrastructure, including best practices, processes, hazard analysis, food auditing, affordable lab testing facilities, and for strict action against counterfeit food producers, free from various pressures, to build a healthy future food safety culture. The appeal was made to take decisive action, not just engage in discussion.

The Bangladesh Food Safety Foundation (BFSF) took a proactive approach to promote World Food Safety Day. They disseminated various World Food Safety Day resource materials to all major print media outlets across the country. This initiative included a specific request for these media houses to publish stories, news pieces, and articles related to food safety 4–6 June. The aim was to maximize public awareness and engagement leading up to and on WFSD, ensuring the crucial message of food safety resonated widely through diverse journalistic content.
