Investing in Families to Open Markets: Farmer Field Schools in Kenya

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), through its Investment Centre and the NARIG project, has made a transformative impact in Kenya. Supporting nearly 300,000 farmers over eight years, the initiative expanded knowledge, improved practices, and boosted incomes in arid and semi-arid regions of the country.
Farmer Field Schools (FFS) have been instrumental in this journey, equipping communities with skills in livestock production, poultry breeding, and beekeeping—critical activities for rural livelihoods. Inspirational stories like those of Esther Munani Kyalo and Josphat Muthui Kangata highlight how collective learning is driving economic growth and reducing rural poverty.
