Seminar on Farmer Field Schools for Sustainable Agrifood Systems: Innovations and Future Directions

13/11/2024 14/11/2024

Date: November 13–14, 2024

Place: Sindh, Pakistan

Farmer field school was first introduced in Pakistan, in 1997 for cotton IPM (Integrated Pest Management), and eventually evolving into a national program for sustainable pest control strategies. This initiative has since expanded to include specialized models like Women Open Schools and Climate Business Field Schools, contributing to FFS’s gradual institutionalization across provinces.

In response to the growing need for adaptation to climate change, FAO launched a global consultation process in 2023 to enhance FFS's effectiveness. The Global Forum on the Future of Farmer Field Schools held in Malawi laid the groundwork for scaling up FFS to address emerging challenges in agrifood systems. Building on this momentum, FAO, in partnership with Pakistani academic institutions, will review and upgrade FFS programs in Sindh and Punjab to enhance sustainability, resilience, and impact.

The upcoming seminar, scheduled for November 13–14, 2024, in Pakistan, aims to achieve the following:

  • Stocktake FFS implementation practices in Sindh Province.
  • Identify innovations and successes to inspire scaling up FFS programming.
  • Increase understanding of FFS’s role in building sustainable agrifood systems amid climate challenges.

The seminar will feature a mix of presentations, poster sessions, and interactive “marketplace” activities to foster knowledge sharing. Participants are encouraged to submit presentations, posters, and media resources that highlight their FFS work.

This event is a key opportunity to strengthen FFS as a tool for building resilient, climate-adapted agricultural communities in the country.
