Broiler Farmer Field Schools advance safer poultry production in Zambia

14/01/2026

Antimicrobial resistance poses a serious threat to animal and public health globally. In poultry production, the misuse or overuse of antimicrobials can accelerate the emergence of resistant pathogens, undermining treatment options and food safety. The Farmer Field School approach addresses this challenge by placing farmers at the centre of learning through participatory, hands-on training. Farmers learn by observing, experimenting, and applying improved practices directly on their farms.

Recent graduations in Mumbwa and Chisamba districts have marked a significant step forward in Zambia’s efforts to promote safer, more sustainable poultry production while addressing the growing challenge of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Through Broiler Farmer Field Schools (FFS), smallholder poultry farmers are gaining practical skills that are transforming livelihoods, strengthening food safety and contributing to more resilient agrifood systems.

Training focuses on good poultry husbandry, biosecurity, vaccination, disease prevention, and prudent antimicrobial use, as well as alternative strategies to reduce disease risks. These practices enable farmers to maintain productivity and reduce reliance on antimicrobials. The initiative is implemented in close collaboration with government institutions and partners, reinforcing Zambia’s One Health approach and strengthening linkages between farmers, extension services, and veterinary authorities.

Beyond improving animal health and food safety, the programme contributes to better nutrition, higher incomes, job creation, and enhanced resilience particularly for women and youth. Traditional leaders have also welcomed the initiative, highlighting the importance of community ownership and peer-to-peer knowledge sharing to scale up good practices beyond the initial group of graduates.
