The fishing gear is defined as a tool used to catch fish and/or aquatic species, such as hook and line, trawl, gill net, trap, spear, etc. Each of these gears can have multiple configurations (FAO glossary). We standardised all the available data on the fishing gears, grouping them into the main categories, following the classification in accordance with the internationally recognized standard (ISSCFG) recommended by CWF and FAO (FAO Fisheries Technical Paper No. 222. Revision 1. Rome, FAO. 1990. 92p.).
