The standard fishing season is defined as the main period of the year during which the "métier" is practised. The standardisation was carried out according to the typology of data collected; the fishing seasons are in most cases continuous. There are not records with a fishing season composed by three months intervals (e.g. January-May-September). We standardised and grouped all the available fishing season data, as follow : In the case in which in one record eight or more months are recorded, this is included in the standard category "all season" (example 1 and 2 in the table). In the case of overlapping in which we have one or more winter months and one or more spring months the seasonal category will be Winter-Spring (example 3 and 4 in the table). The case, in which a whole season is recorded, for example summer (June-July-August) but there is an overlapping of a month with the previous one (spring) and with the next one (autumn), this will be included in the category Summer (example 5 in the table). The simplest cases are those in which only one, two or three months belonging to the same season are recorded (example 6 and 7 in the table). The case of any month recorded : missing data (example 8 in the table).
The possible seasonal combinations can be defined as following : January-February-March: Winter April-May-June: Spring July-August-September: Summer October-November-December: Autumn Winter months and Spring months: Winter-Spring Winter months and Summer months: Winter-Summer Spring months and Summer months: Spring-Summer Autumn months and Winter months: Autumn-Winter Spring months and Autumn months: Spring-Autumn Summer months and Autumn months: Summer-Autumn At least three seasons together: All Season (all the year) Some examples of data recorded :
