8. SUMMARY OF RECOMMENDATIONS

  1. Survey and Reclamation. A proper survey should be made of potentially cultivable waters and the reclamation of suitable areas should be undertaken to extend fish culture to fresh areas.

  2. Production of Fish Seed. Better spawn collection centers should be established and the commercial production of fish seed of major carps through injection of pituitary hormones should be taken up in earnest.

The expert has submitted a list of the equipment and material required for fish breeding experiments to the Director of Fisheries. This equipment should be obtained before the ensuing fish breeding season so that the fish culture expert can assist in the production of fish seed and training of personnel at that time. The list also includes the total requirement for pituitary glands, total number of breeders and field staff required for the production of ten million quality fish seed.

  3. Composite Fish Farm. Twante Fish Farm should be converted into a composite fish farm, self-sufficient in its requirement for stocking materials. The farm should have an adequate number of nursery and rearing ponds for rearing fry for the stocking ponds and facilities should be provided for large-scale production of carp seed for its own requirement.

  4. Culture of Major Carps. Steps should be taken for further improvement of nursery management and other fish cultural techniques to ensure a higher rate of survival and production.

  5. Culture of Exotic Species1

    1. Some attention might be given to the cultivation of common carp (the Israeli strain) at higher altitudes but not at the expense of successful development of the indigenous major carps.

    2. Tilapia culture should be popularized by establishing more seed distribution centers, especially in upper Burma, and supplying seed to the public. Tilapia-cum-murrel culture should be tried.

    3. Further attempts should be made to introduce grass carp in Inle Lake to control aquatic weeds.

    4. The usefulness of introducing silver carp might be explored.

    5. The reasons for unsatisfactory results from paddy-cum-fish culture with tilapia might be investigated.

  6. Training. Two of the technical staff should be granted fellowships for one-year training courses in the Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, India. One of them should have an adequate knowledge of chemistry so that he can obtain training in water and soil chemistry.

One officer with experience in fish culture in Burma should be sent to a foreign institute where training facilities in the management of impounded waters, forage-cum-predatory fish culture and pond fertilization are available.

1 During the next assignment of a TA expert, this matter may be considered in more detail.
