5. SUMMARY OF RECOMMENDATIONS

  1. The Kajansi Experimental Station should be devoted entirely to experimental work, involving the breeding and selection of suitable brood stock. Fry production work should be assigned as far as possible to the regional fry centres, which should implement the results of experimental work as soon as practicable. The Fisheries Officer stationed at Kajansi should be responsible for fish farming work, and should be given adequate staff to carry out these duties. An administrative officer should be appointed at Kajansi to look after the routine administrative work at the Station.

  2. Feeding and fertilizing experiments should be continued at Kajansi. All kinds of feeds available in Uganda should be tried, e.g., sorghum, millet, maize, cotton seed, oil cakes, etc.

  3. Experiments in crossing the herbivorous species of Tilapia should be continued. Further trials should be made to breed the Nile perch in ponds.

  4. Studies on the possibilities of culturing fresh-water prawns should be continued.

  5. Based on the result of a survey of fish farming possibilities in various parts of the country, it is strongly recommended that Kigezi District be given top priority in official fish farming developmental work, because of its urgent requirements and potentialities. A pond construction unit should be established by the Government to enable proper planning and construction of fish ponds in the district.

  6. Because of the urgency and importance of developing fish farming on a large scale in Kigezi, a fish farm engineer should be employed by the Government and stationed permanently in the district in charge of the Pond Construction Unit.

  7. Based on the results of experimental work on carp production, it is recommended that carp breeding ponds should be established adjacent to the main lakes in Kigezi. Stocking of these lakes with large numbers of carp fry of suitable size raised in such ponds is expected to result in commercial fisheries for carp.

  8. A course in fish culture should be included in the curriculum of the Fisheries Training Institute being established in Entebbe.
