FAO/UNITED NATIONS DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME (TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE) REPORTS ON FISHERIES

This document is Report No. TA 3076 in the series of FAO reports produced under the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Since 1 January 1966, reports produced under the former Expanded Programme of Technical Assistance (EPTA) have appeared in the UNDP(TA) series. The numbering of reports in the UNDP(TA) series is unbroken and follows consecutively the numbering of the former EPTA series.

Since 1 January 1962, those reports which concerned FAO technical assistance in fisheries have been numbered consecutively in a subseries within the general series.

The present report is the two hundred and twenty-fifth report in the fisheries subseries: FAO Fish UNDP(TA) Rep., FIR/UNDP(TA) 225.

FAO. Report to the Government of Israel on the Potential for Oyster Culture at Elat on the Gulf of Aqaba, based on the work of P.R. Walne. Rome, 1972. 13 p. United Nations Development Programme, [Report] No. TA 3076

ABSTRACT

The report discusses the possibilities of embarking upon large-scale oyster culture in the area of the Gulf of Aqaba. Judgement on the suitability of selecting Elat for oyster culture is influenced by three main factors: method of culture, stocks of oysters and inherent productivity of the sea in that area. Although there is little information available, the open nature of the coast, the few oysters that exist and the clarity of the water all suggest that there may be major difficulties in establishing oyster culture in Elat. A one year programme for 1972 was drawn up and was designed to answer some of the basic questions on oyster growth and on the food content of the water. Among the suggestions for improvement of existing facilities were better accommodation and up-to-date equipment for the laboratory staff.

If the studies made in 1972 are sufficiently encouraging, some prediction can be made on the scale of effort likely to be required for the project to be brought to fruition in a reasonably short time. Decisions would have to be made on the species to be cultivated, the method of culture (including predator control) and the commercial outlets envisaged. The potential of pearl oysters is another study to be made after the one year programme has been finalized.
