1. INTRODUCTION

1.1 TERMS OF REFERENCE

The consultant was appointed for a period of one month under a project developed by the Government of Greece, assisted by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). The primary assignment was to make a survey of the disease situation in cultivated freshwater fish, rainbow trout in particular (Salmo gairdneri), and to make the necessary recommendations for practical means of control or elimination of such diseases. Suggestions were also made in other areas of fisheries, including diet, fish abnormalities, problems associated with the migration of eel elvers and, most important of all, a recommendation banning the importation of trout eggs or other fish.

1.2 BACKGROUND

This survey was conducted in Greece from 2–26 April 1973. A total of 35 trout hatcheries, 1 freshwater carp hatchery (Cyprinus carpio) and 2 brackishwater hatcheries was visited. These hatcheries are located near Ioannina, Louros, Arta, Aghios Ghorghios, Igoumenitsa and the Edessa area. Return visits were made to the State hatchery at Louros and several other private hatcheries. Other areas visited in connexion with problems dealing with eels and elvers included the lake in Corfu, Kalamas Dam and the waterfall near Ioannina.

1.3 CONTACTS

The following principal Greek Government fisheries personnel were contacted during this survey:

  1. Mr. Grimbas, Hatchery Manager, Louros;

  2. Mr. George Trambas, Fisheries Expert, Preveza;
