Sea Weed Culture Specialist:
Under the general direction of the Director Operations Service, and in co-operation with MOFA and OSM, the consultant will:
Make an initial visit to the mariculture site in Laamu Atoll, and provide written recommendations on the most suitable methods for Eucheuma culture in different terrains.
Provide written recommendations for clean methods for sun-drying harvested wet seaweed and for packaging of the dried seaweed in commercially acceptable forms, for both local processing and for export.
Provide subsequent technical backstopping via telephone, facsimile and/or electronic mail consultations, with regard to culturing techniques and drying of commercial tropical sea weeds.
Provide assistance in the procurement of pertinent literature on the culture, ecology and processing of commercial tropical sea weeds.
Provide assistance in the selection and if necessary, advice on the installation of agar processing machinery.
Provide technical reports as required and an end-of-assignment report for clearance by FAO headquarters before formal submission to the Government.
The sea weed specialist should have experience in culturing sea weeds from production of seed, through growing the harvesting. He/She should have at least five years experience in culturing tropical seaweeds of commercial value.
