Closer working relations between various branches of the Ministry of Fisheries concerned with management of inland waters fisheries resource should be established.
A fisheries research station at Iquitos to evaluate the fishery resources of the Amazon area of Peru and to develop practical fish farming methods, including development of fish feeds from locally available materials should be established.
Development of the sport fishery in mountain streams and lakes and in the Amazon area must be encouraged. The Amazon area is virtually untouched as regards sports fishery development. Improvement in air transportation now makes this area much more accessible to tourists.
Comprehensive sampling surveys of water storage reservoirs should be carried out. This information can then be used to develop a plan for management of the fishery of each reservoir. There is a need for better coordination of information so that the fishery can be managed on the basis of recommendations for management biologists.
Precautions should be taken in regard to importing exotic species or any fishes or fish eggs which might carry diseases. Peru is relatively free of serious fish diseases and should maintain this status if at all possible.
