Seven new types of gears were recorded during the present study. Brief descriptions of these gear are given below:

It is a fixed gill net used by the fishermen in the beels of Khulna, Gopalgonj and Natore districts. The net is made of multifilament cotton yarn provided with bamboo or synthetic floats and earthen sinkers. The fishermen set the net from mid water to bottom water by attaching floats to the head line with long rope. The mesh size of the net is 25 mm. One fishermen operates the net and 4-6 liftings are done per day. Fish species caught are mainly major carps, common carps, boal (Wallago attu) etc.
It is a multifilament gill net used by the fishermen in the rivers of greater Sylhet district to catch mainly major carps and catfishes. The net measures 60 m in length, 4.5 m in breadth and 50 mm in mesh size. It possesses synthetic floats at the head rope and earthen sinkers at the ground rope. One fishermen operates the net from a dingi nauka and two liftings are done per day. Fishing season varies from June to December.
This is a multifilament nylon or cotton gill net extensively used in Kaptai lake. This net has four kinds, viz., jal no. 1, jal no 3, jal no. 6 and jal no. 9 depending upon the thickness of twine. The length, breadth and mesh size of this net vary according to jal number. However, this net is comparatively long with large mesh size. Jal no. 1 measures from 300-500 m in length, 3-4 m in breadth and 80-100 mm in mesh size, whereas, the jal no. 9 measures from 500-650 m in length, 8-9 m in breadth and 220-240 mm in mesh sizes. The net is provided with bamboo floats and earthen sinkers. The fishermen set the net in mid water by attaching the floats at the upper line of the net with more than meter long rope. One fisherman operates the net from a dingi nauka (chota nauka). This net is used to catch mainly Catla catla, Labeo rohita, Cirrhinus mrigala, Labeo calbasu, Notopterus chitala, Wallago attu and Tilapia sp. But the catch of the jal no. 1 consists of mainly tilapia which comprises about 76% to the catch. Fishing period varies from September to May.
It is a multifilament nylon seine net operated by the fisherment in rivers of greater Mymensingh district. The length, breadth and mesh size of the net range from 140-150m, 10-15 m and 25 mm respectively. 6-8 fishermen operate the net to catch mainly shrimp and catfishes. The fishing period varies from April to December.
It is a single bag net operated by the fishermen in the beels of Gopalgonj, Khulna and Natore districts for catching all types of fish. The net is made of tyre cord with mesh size ranging from 40-70 mm. It is operated by 1-2 fishermen and 2-6 liftings are done per day. Durability of the net varies from 2-3 years.
It is a clasp net operated by the fishermen in the beels of Gopalgonj and Khulna districts. Its mesh size ranges from 15-45 mm. One fisherman operates the net from a boat during sunny day to catch mainly carps and W. attu. Durability of the net is only one year.
It is a drag net almost similar to moi jal. It is operated by the fishermen mainly in the rivers of greater Sylhet and Mymensingh districts. It has number of pockets at its lower margin. The sinkers are attached to the free margin of the pockets which keep the mouth of the pocket open during operation. The length, breadth and mesh size of the net vary from 3-4 m, 2-3 m and 6-13 mm respectively. Two fishermen operate the net from a dingi nauka to catch mainly shrimp along with other small bottom living fishes. The fishing period varies from January to December. 12-20 hauling is done per day. Durability of the net varies from 1-2 years.
