Global inventory of fisheries data collection systems and improvement of existing methods

  • The aim of this activity is to obtain a complete picture of all monitoring systems in use, so as to identify gaps in monitoring and above all to assess the quality of the systems used.
  • The main inventory should cover data systems on all aspects of fisheries, including data on fleets, employment, processing, consumption, trade and sociological and economic aspects.
  • This should also facilitate an evaluation of data collection and handling practices by country, the flows of data from national to regional and global levels and hence of the data as published by regional fisheries bodies and FAO.
  • The results should provide a dynamic reference framework to give indication of quality of statistical data available in each country, progress made and improvements still required. Finally, it should form the basis for improvements and identification of training needs in developing countries to be addressed in a second phase.
