FAO Members participating in last month’s Thirty-fourth Session of the Committee on Fisheries (COFI) emphasized the importance of safety at sea and working conditions in the fisheries sector and welcomed the close cooperation between FAO, ILO and IMO, including through the Joint Working Group on IUU fishing and related matters.

Following the request by COFI members FAO is further strengthening its international cooperation on occupational health and safety issues in the fisheries and aquaculture sectors and on the promotion of decent work for fishers and fish workers. A summary of FAO’s most recent activities on fishing safety and decent work in fisheries can be found in COFI Information document 14.1.
