26/01/2022

The FAO manual on Safety at sea for small-scale fishers has now been published in 16 languages: Arabic, Bengali, Chinese, English, French, Gujarati, Indonesian (Bahasa), Malayalam, Oriya (Odia), Portuguese, Russian, Sinhala, Spanish, Tamil, Telugu, and Turkish. More than 70 percent of the global population are speaking these languages and have free of charge access to a comic style manual with simple and clear guidance on fishing safety.

The manual aims to contribute to a culture of safety awareness among fisherfolk, reduce the number of accidents among small-scale fishers and increase the chances of survival if accidents occur. The manual provides guidance on safety matters related to the work on a small-scale fishing vessel (e.g. fire safety, deck safety, lifesaving equipment, lighting and ventilation), personal safety and navigation safety. Checks and procedures to be performed before a fishing trip, as well as guidance for survival at sea, are also included in this manual.

The manual has been prepared in close collaboration with the Bay of Bengal Programme- Intergovernmental Organization (BOBP-IGO).
