Food security and nutrition measurement

FAO provides training and technical assistance to member countries to build the capacity of national institutions on measurement of food security and food and nutrient consumption.

FAO's work is ultimately aimed at promoting country ownership of FAO's methodologies and standards and supports the use of appropriate tools to inform their policies on food security and nutrition.

Through the Voices of the Hungry project, FAO supports countries in building country-level capacity to use the Food Insecurity Experience Scale (FIES) in national surveys, providing technical assistance to national institutions and conducting regional and country-level workshops.

Capacity development activities on food security and nutrition statistics supports countries to:

1. Enhance national capacities on food consumption data collection and analysis in order to produce reliable and statistically sound food security indicators and food and nutrient consumption statistics;

2. Adapt and include the FIES survey module in national surveys, analyze the data, and produce estimates of the prevalence of moderate or severe food insecurity.

Capacity development activities include the development of training material on the Prevalence of Undernourishment (PoU) and on the use of the FIES.

In addition to working directly with national statistical officers, FAO provides expert advice to development partners on improving data collection and processing to produce reliable and robust food security indicators and food and nutrient consumption statistics. This includes collaboration at the international, regional and country levels with agencies such as the World Food Programme, World Bank, UNICEF, Joint Research Centre of the European Commission and IFPRI.
