Food and Agriculture Statistics

SDG monitoring

FAO is the custodian agency of 21 SDGs indicators. Eight of them fall under the food and agriculture statistics custodianship. Through its work on food and agriculture statistics, FAO supports countries in improving their statistical capacities on the Sustainable Development Goals' (SDGs) monitoring and the measurement, dissemination and use of the indicators.

Capacity development activities on food and agriculture statistics aim at supporting countries in computing and monitoring eight SDGs indicators:

- SDG Indicator 2.1.1 and 2.1.2.  FAO supports countries in data collection, analysis and reporting for two key indicators for monitoring progress on eradicating hunger and achieving food security in the world: the prevalence of undernourishment, or PoU (SDG Indicator 2.1.1) and the prevalence of moderate or severe food insecurity, based on the Food Insecurity Experience Scale (FIES) (SDG Indicator 2.1.2);

- SDG Indicator 2.a.1. Support includes technical assistance on adopting, producing, interpreting, and applying SDG Indicator 2.a.1. Technical assistance is provided to countries in their effort to collect data on agricultural capital formation, providing sub-sector details relating to crops, livestock, fisheries, aquaculture, and forestry;

- Training and technical assistance is provided to member countries on the data collection, interpretation and dissemination of SDG Indicators 2.3.1 and 2.3.2;

SDG Indicator 12.3.1;

- Indicator C-2 (Direct agricultural loss attributed to disasters) of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction and the corresponding SDG Indicator 1.5.2 (Direct economic loss attributed to disasters in relation to global gross domestic product).
