Consumer Price Indices. September 2022

Global Overview

During the second quarter (April–June) of 2022, the global annual inflation rate of the general consumer price index (CPI) was, on average, 12.9 percent, which is a significant increase compared to the 10.3 percent recorded in the first quarter (January–March) of 2022. Asia experienced the highest growth in the annual inflation rate of the general CPI in the second quarter of 2022 compared to the previous quarter (+3.1 percentage points), followed by Europe (+2.8 percentage points), the Americas (+2.1 percentage points), Africa (+2.0 percentage points) and Oceania (+1.2 percentage points). The Americas and Africa had the highest annual inflation rate of the regional general CPI among all regions in the second quarter of 2022, at 14.8 percent and 14.5 percent, respectively (Figure 1).

The global annual inflation rate of the food consumer price index significantly increased from 13.1 percent in the first quarter of 2022 to 18.3 percent in the second quarter of 2022. The annual inflation rate of the food CPI in Asia recorded the most significant increase in the second quarter of 2022 compared to the previous quarter (+7.5 percentage points). Next came Europe (+4.4 percentage points), the Americas (+4.2 percentage points), Africa (+3.6 percentage points) and Oceania (+1.6 percentage points). Asia and Africa also had the highest annual inflation rate of the regional food CPI among all regions in the second quarter of 2022, at 24.3 percent and 19.4 percent, respectively (Figure 2).

The generalized increase in inflation continued during the second quarter of 2022, with only nine countries experiencing an annual increase of the food CPI between 0 and 2 percent, and just one (Benin) experiencing deflation. More than half of the countries for which data are available had inflation rates above 10 percent: apart from Lebanon, the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Zimbabwe and Sudan, which are dealing with chronic hyperinflation, the highest rates were observed in Türkiye, Argentina, Sri Lanka and Suriname (Figure 3).
