UNFCCC West Africa Capacity Development Project - first training workshop in Rome

24/02/2015

24 - 26 February 2015, Rome, Italy

The UNFCCC secretariat works with international partners, including FAO, UNDP/UNEP, the United States Department of the Interior (US-DoI), the United States Environmental Protection Agency (US-EPA), the Global Forest Observations Initiative (GFOI), the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), on a three-year capacity development project for Sustainable National GHG Inventory Management Systems in seven West African countries (Benin, Burkina Faso, Cabo Verde, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Senegal, and Togo).

The project focuses on improving the quality of national GHG inventories in the agriculture and forestry sectors, taking into account specific national circumstances of participating countries.

As part of UNFCCC project activities, FAO has organized a three day training session on improving statistical data for forestry and land use, focusing on the Collect Earth tool. This tool has been developed in the context of a REDD+ capacity development project supported by the International Climate Initiative of Germany.

The Monitoring and Assessment of Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Mitigation Potential in Agriculture project of FAO, funded by Norway and Germany, and the UNREDD project serve as FAO leads for this UNFCCC project.

The next steps planned by partners are upcoming national workshops in Ghana, Cote Côte d’Ivoire and Senegal (March - April 2015) with FAO participation.
