FAO organizes two virtual trainings in the context of FAO GEF capacity development activities in Sudan

04/01/2021

In the framework of the “Landscape Approach to Riverine Forest Restoration, Biodiversity Conservation and Livelihood Improvement” FAO GEF project in Sudan, two virtual natural capital trainings have taken place, respectively in January and in March 2021. They were attended by Forest National Corporation (FNC), Ministry of Agriculture and University of Khartoum officers, professors and employees.

As pointed out by the trainings, in the context of Sudan riverine forests, natural capital supports valuation of current status of forest resources degradation along the Nile, their wood and non-wood forest products as well as their ecosystem services and biodiversity and inform sustainable natural resources planning and management. Natural capital supports the assessment of the economic, social and cultural values of the selected riverine forests, contributing to their restoration, biodiversity conservation and livelihood improvement.

The trainings focused on the System of Environmental-Economic Accounting for Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (SEEA AFF) accounts and their compilation through FAOSTAT. The SEEA AFF, as environmental-economic statistical framework allows organizing data to enable the description and analysis of the relationship between the environment and the economic activities related to agriculture, forestry and fisheries. In particular its focus on forest ecosystem services, including carbon sequestration, may support a sustainable forest management planning and facilitate monitoring and reporting according to main international frameworks, as the SDGs, the UNFCCC and the UNCBD.
