Third capacity development workshop of the UNFCCC West Africa Project

11/05/2015

11-15 May 2015, Dakar, Senegal

The U.S. Department of the Interior (USDoI) and FAO are jointly conducting the third capacity training Workshop on Agriculture, Forestry, and Other Land Use (AFOLU) for National stakeholders involved in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reporting. The workshop, held under the aegis of the UNFCCC Capacity Development Framework Project in West Africa, brings together participants from Cape Verde, Burkina Faso and Senegal.

The aim of the workshop is to improve knowledge through data and tools for the assessment of GHG emissions estimates in agriculture, forestry and the land use sectors. It uses a range of basic datasets and data analysis tools available from FAO, in support of the development and quality assurance/quality control (QA/AC) of data, for a robust national GHG inventory. This is the third of a series of meetings in 2015, with events already organized at FAO headquarters and Ghana.

USDoI and FAO will deliver sessions on a range of FAO tools, available freely to users for the preparation of GHG inventories, including Collect Earth, the FAOSTAT Emissions database and the newly developed FAOSTAT Emission analysis tools, currently in test mode, which allow for regional overview and QA/QC analyses for agriculture, as well as provide geo-referenced data for AFOLU.

The workshop will provide participants with training to identify key national data processes relevant to data gathering, identification and analysis, including the use of official data communicated to FAO via FAOSTAT and the Forest Resources Assessment

The FAO contribution is supported by a collaboration between Climate, Energy and Tenure (NRC), Statistics (ESS) and Forest Assessment, Management and Conservation (FOM) Divisions.
