Workshop on Open Agriculture (Statistics) Data

In June 2017, several key stakeholders, including FAO, committed to provide assistance to the Government of Kenya in advancing on its commitments under the Nairobi Declaration on Open Data, which was an outcome of the High Level Ministerial Conference on Open Data for Agriculture and Nutrition which took place between 14-16th June in Nairobi, Kenya, and titled “Catalyzing Agricultural Transformation for Inclusive Growth”. 

The FAO commitment was made in light of FAO work on advancing open agriculture statistics in select African countries. Since then, the Statistics Division of FAO (ESS), in collaboration with FAO-Kenya, has worked with the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries (MoALF) to help advance on this initiative at the ministry-level. FAO has also collaborated with the Kenya Bureau of Statistics, and other key stakeholders, including the secretariat of the Global Open Data on Agriculture and Nutrition (GODAN) and the Alliance for a Green Revolution for Africa (AGRA). 

At the request of the MoALF, and in collaboration with other stakeholders, FAO is organizing a workshop on Open Data for the 26 February -1 March in Nairobi.  The first two days of the workshop will enable stakeholders to present progress on their commitments made in June, and take stock of next steps. It will include presentations on Open Data implementation to support further progress, with specific focus on how open data can have a role in agriculture statistics.  The last two days, directed more at technical officials, will provide hands-on training in advancing on statistical data dissemination and Open Data implementation.
