Social statistics

FAO’s social statistics provide evidence-based data to support FAO’s and member countries’ policies in reducing rural poverty and enhance rural development.

Social statistics’ analytical work and methodological development enable measuring the multidimensional poverty indicator that is specific to rural areas and promote access to agricultural and rural livelihood statistics.

Through the development of sound methodologies, capacity development activities, data collection and analysis, countries are supported in assessing agricultural damage and loss as a result of disasters and extreme events and in strengthening the resilience of agricultural livelihoods.

In addition, the social statistics team manages the Rural Livelihoods Information System (RuLIS), a tool aimed at supporting policy formulation and the structural transformation of agriculture and rural economies. RuLIS brings together harmonized indicators and comparable data across countries and over time on rural incomes, livelihoods and rural development.
