Pillar 3
Support and follow-up to G20 Matera Declaration
Pillar 4
Longer-term solutions – developed to transform agrifood systems

Background

As climate change increases, mitigation of the effects of water stress is becoming a major challenge for the sustainability of agricultural activity, especially for small and vulnerable irrigated farms.
This concern for reconciling agricultural development with sustainable water resource management is currently a major concern for the Moroccan government.
Similarly, farmers in small-scale irrigated areas suffer from a lack of agricultural advisory services and need support for their conversion to water-efficient irrigation. This will enable them to improve the quality of their water, professionalise their operations and generate substantial income.
This situation is all the more pressing with the spread of COVID-19 and must be anticipated by:
- increasing access to water;
- the use of techniques and technologies for better water management and recovery; and
- strengthening access to agricultural advisory services, particularly by using digital tools.

Objective

Enhance the standard of irrigation services provided to smallholder farmers

The proposed project, in an intervention area of the order of 1000 Ha, aims to improve access and quality of irrigation services for farmers in smallholder irrigated areas. The project aims to modernize and upgrade traditional and modern irrigation networks and improve access to agricultural advisory services.

Activities

The activities of the project will consist in:

  • Improve the quality of irrigation services to farmers in smallholder irrigated areas.
  • Improve access to agricultural advisory services and modern irrigation technologies at the plot level in the project intervention areas.
