Inputs from HiHi-FAO Haiti to the corporate umbrella programme for COVID-19 respons

Haiti is a Small Island Developing States (SIDS) facing natural disasters (cyclones, hurricanes, earthquakes, and droughts), political and socio-economic instability and a severe food security crisis along with a population growth rate higher than its GDP. The population of Haitian has doubled since 1980 with more than half of its approximately 11 million population live in Port-au-Prince or in one of the country’s major cities. Over 6 million Haitians live below the poverty line on less than USD 2.41/day, and more than 2.5 million fall below the extreme poverty line of USD 1.23/day.1 Almost 70% of rural households are considered chronically poor and lack access to basic goods and services. For these reasons, Haiti is a focus country of the Hand in Hand initiative.

The COVID-19 outbreak in Haiti is further deteriorating the already fragile food and nutritional situation of the population. The National Coordination of Food Security (CNSA) estimates that 4.1 million people is already in a situation of acute food insecurity for the period March - June 2020. The agricultural food supply situation and the performance of the sector are likely to be severely affected for the remainder of the year and beyond, worsening an already difficult situation after a period of two years of political instability. Impact assessments of the impact of COVID 19 on food security, livelihoods and agro-food systems (FAO/PAM, WB) and on the socio-economic situation (UNDP) are currently in preparation and/or under implementation. The Government, through the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Environment, has developed response plans proposing a set of measures and actions to mitigate the impacts of the Covid19 pandemic on the agri-food sector.
