Inputs from HiHi-FAO Pakistan to the corporate umbrella programme for COVID-19 response

As the 2019 Pakistan Overview of Food Security and Nutrition (POFI) notes, the state of food security in Pakistan was already of serious concern before the arrival of COVID-19. One-fifth of the population, around 40 million people, were undernourished. Pakistan had a triple burden of malnutrition, its people consuming low quality, insufficiently diverse diets. Poverty was a major driver of the persistence of the situation: two-fifths of the population, around 84 million people, experienced multi-dimensional poverty and one quarter, around 53 million people, were living under the poverty line.

The impact of COVID-19 pandemic is further aggravating already difficult situation in Pakistan; cash-based, informal, unskilled labor, often by internal migrants, and poor health and nutrition in urban and rural areas. While the food supply chain has been ensured, markets have remained highly informal, with poor hygiene, no set up for social distancing, and food safety is an issue in the country. Food prices shocks, sudden unemployment, food trade and market disruption, food logistics disruptions, food production disruptions and labor migration pattern changes are affecting the most vulnerable groups
