Inputs from HiHi - FAO Zimbabwe to the corporate umbrella programme for COVID-19 response

The COVID 19 pandemic greatly disrupted lives and livelihoods of many people including smallholder farmers in Zimbabwe. This pandemic affected the country at a time when it was battling to tackle the deteriorating macro-economic situation and escalating food security challenges. Whilst Zimbabwe has a strong reliance on agriculture for food and nutrition as well as economic growth, an estimated 7.7 mil-lion people out of the total population of 15 million are affected by food shortages in 2020 (WFP, 2020). Over 70% rely on agriculture for livelihoods and food security and the sector contributes about 10% to the national GDP.

The pandemic directly affected livelihoods of the majority of the population, particularly on both food commodity prices and agro-food based incomes. The movement restrictions instituted through lock-down had down steam effect to the agro-economy especially primary producers, traders and ago-indus-tries. Restrictions on the movement of goods and people had far-reaching impacts on the farming sector affecting food supply systems, worsening the food insecurity situation in rural and urban areas.

Disruptions in the supply chain and weakening demand for agriculture commodities have lead to declin-ing incomes as well as restricted operations of industrial consumers of commodities like horticultural commodities affected smallholder farmers’ trading activities and limiting the availability of key agricul-tural inputs like labour.
