A new brochure reflects the impact of FAO’s work on food safety

28/03/2023

FAO has released a brochure that provides an overview of its work on food safety, which is available in Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish. The publication called Safe food for everyone – FAO’s work on food safety: science, standards and good practices can be downloaded as a pdf or read online as a digital report with links to videos and more in-depth content.

“We are delighted to share this publication that has benefited from the input of colleagues in numerous divisions and offices in a collaborative fashion – much the way we work on food safety itself,” said Markus Lipp, FAO Senior Food Safety Officer, who heads up the FAO priority programme on safe food.

The publication features examples that can be replicated and tools that can be used to promote food safety. It explains that ensuring safe food for all will bring us closer to achieving Sustainable Development Goal 2 (Zero Hunger) and other related goals and targets while emphasizing FAO’s commitment to transform agrifood systems and provide safe food for everyone.

Science looms large in the brochure, with a section describing the Joint FAO/WHO Scientific Advice Programme. The publication looks back on achievements and forward to the safety implications of new foods and food production systems that may be reaching markets in the future.

A resounding message is that food safety is everyone’s business. Whether we draft policy, grow, process, transport, store, distribute, sell or prepare food, we have the power to promote food safety and protect health.
