FAO at SPS Committee session on emerging risks and new agricultural technologies
13/11/2024The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) participated in an event hosted by the World Trade Organization (WTO) Committee on Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures (SPS Committee) on 11 November 2024 in Geneva and online.
The thematic session explored WTO Members' experiences, best practices, successes and challenges associated with emerging risks and the new agricultural technologies that could help address them.
During the session on emerging risks, Vittorio Fattori, FAO, presented insights from FAO’s food safety foresight programme, including on new food sources and production systems, circular economy, climate change, environmental inhibitors, and upcoming work on personalized nutrition.
“It is important that, together with the food safety dimension, the regulatory significance and possible trade implications of emerging issues are also considered and addressed. We believe that by providing this foresight approach, we help to bridge science and policy by providing advice that can be proactive so that decision-making, standard setting when relevant, is really timely as well”, said Fattori.
