Pathways for the Future of Sustainable Food Systems in the Mediterranean

14/06/2021

FAO, CIHEAM, UfM, One Planet SFS Programme and PRIMA join forces to contribute to the UN Food Systems Summit and to advance food systems transformation in the Mediterranean

Within the framework of the 2021 UN Food Systems Summit, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the International Centre for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies (CIHEAM), and the Secretariat of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfMS),the One Planet Network’s Sustainable Food Systems Programme (OPN-SFSP) and the Partnership for Research and Innovation in the Mediterranean Area (PRIMA) Foundation have come together to co-organise two Independent Food Systems Summit Dialogues on Pathways for the future of Sustainable Food Systems in the Mediterranean.

The dialogues will aim at fostering a broader common understanding of the complex environment of Sustainable Food Systems (SFS) for coping with the growing and interdependent challenges facing the Mediterranean region. Convened as a multi-stakeholder and multi-disciplinary forum for scientific, technical and policy dialogue, the events will highlight collaborative and science-based pathways leading to the transformation of food systems in the Mediterranean towards the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), directly contributing to the Food Systems Summit’s vision and objectives.

These Dialogues will also contribute to setting the stage for the inception of the multi-stakeholder initiative (“SFS-MED Platform”) currently under co-development by CIHEAM, FAO and UfMS as an affiliated project of the OPN-SFSP.

The second “SFS-MED” Independent Food Systems Summit Dialogue will take place on Monday, 21 June 2021 from 14:30 to 18:00 (CET). The focus of this Dialogue will be to identify what is needed to enable the actions and entry points identified in the first one, ensuring an impact on the sustainability of food systems in the Mediterranean. The panel discussions will be structured around key enablers such as partnerships, finance and capacity and awareness building.

The provisional agendais available at this link.
