ينطوي الفاقد والمهدر من الأغذية على آثار تطال العديد من التحديات الأكثر إلحاحًا في عصرنا. وتحدث مستويات كبيرة من الفاقد والمهدر من الأغذية على طول السلاسل التي تربط مكان إنتاج الأغذية بمكان استهلاكها. وفي الوقت ذاته، يعاني مئات الملايين من الأشخاص على كوكب الأرض من نقص التغذية ويتعذر على مليارات الأشخاص تحمل كلفة نمط غذائي صحي. ويسهم الفاقد والمهدر من الأغذية في تغير المناخ ويضغطان بشكل هائل على الموارد الطبيعية والنظم الإيكولوجية والتنوع البيولوجي في العالم، ما يعرض للخطر قدرتنا وقدرة أجيال المستقبل على ضمان الأمن الغذائي والتغذية وسبل العيش دون تجاوز العتبات الحرجة لاستدامة البيئة الطبيعية.
